Managing the Spread of Rats

At Prima Group, our primary concern is the health and wellbeing of our tenants. We strive to create communities that are safe, hygienic, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike. A problem that has been brought to our attention is the presence of rats in homes, gardens, and public spaces. We take this issue incredibly seriously and take regular action to address infestations. However, we also need your help to prevent the problem from occurring.

Awareness

Rats are most active at night, avoiding interaction with humans. This makes them difficult to spot, but there are some telltale signs to look out for:

  • Rat Droppings – Dark brown and similar in shape to grains of rice. These are easy to notice indoors but may be harder to spot outside.

  • Gnaw and Rub Marks – Rats leave grease and dirt smudges on surfaces, particularly skirting boards and doors. Their claws and teeth also leave scratches, often on wires, walls, and woodwork.

  • Rat Holes and Nests – Rats burrow next to solid structures like sheds and bin shelters. Indoors, nests are often found in lofts, walls, and under eaves, usually made from shredded materials.

If you notice any of these signs in your home, it’s important to let us know immediately so we can act quickly. If you see these signs in public areas, such as streets or alleyways, please report them to your local council so they can investigate.

Prevention

Rats rely on human activity for food and shelter. Small changes to our daily routines can make a big difference in keeping them away:

  • Food Waste – Littered food, fast food packaging, and improperly disposed household waste attract rats. Indoors, food should be stored securely to reduce risk.

  • Clutter & Debris – Piles of rubbish, overgrown gardens, or cluttered lofts provide nesting materials and hiding spots. Keeping spaces clear helps deter rodents.

  • Open Entry Points – Cracks or holes in walls, floors, doors, and windows make it easy for rats to enter. Sealing these gaps helps prevent infestations before they start.

Extermination & Support

Despite our best efforts, infestations can still occur. Rats are resilient and reproduce quickly, so early action is key. If you notice any of the signs mentioned above in your home, Prima Group can help. Please contact us at primagroup.org/customer-enquiries or call our freephone number: 0333 355 9000.

For sightings in public spaces that Prima Group does not manage, such as streets or alleyways, please report them to your local council:
