Tax Credits Are Ending

You may have received a red and blue leaflet from the DWP - this is simply information. It is not a migration letter asking you to claim Universal Credit.

Everyone of working age must move to Universal Credit (UC) by the end of 2024, but you MUST wait for your migration letter because claiming too early will affect your transitional protection and potentially the amount of money you receive.

What happens next:

  • Wait until you receive your official UC Migration Notice Letter from Tax Credits.

  • It is important to complete your Tax Credit renewal before changing to UC.

  • When you get your UC migration letter, you will have three months to act on it. Your deadline date will be included in the letter.

  • If you don’t complete the UC claim, your tax credit payments will end on the date shown in your letter.

  • We recommend you Seek Advice - Our Income Officers can refer you to RAISE, who can provide free advice or alternatively, you can call the free Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Help to Claim Advisors on 0800 144 8 444. Open 8 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday.

  • If you are still unsure and would like to talk to our Income & Support team, call us on 0151 452 0202 and ask to speak to your Income Officer.

It is important that you DO NOT make a Universal Credit claim before you receive the migration letter. This can remove the eligibility for transitional protection which is offered by the DWP.
